Review

2nd read (Feb 2026): I love a literary moment, so I had to re-read this when everyone else was too. The story really is permeated by misery, and what struck me the most is the characters' insistence on their own misery even when they're offered alternatives.

If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger: I should not seem a part of it.
